    The Iranian regime strikes, which had occurred in the past, have intensified since the United States and Israel launched strikes on Iran on February 28. These attacks place the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) in a difficult position. The autonomous region maintains close relations with Western countries while also sharing a long border with Iran. Kurdish Iranian opposition groups have established themselves in the region over many years. The KRG leadership in Erbil has been critical of the Kurdish Iranian groups and wary that they might drag the region into conflict.

    Half a year ago it was an open secret that CIA and Mossad are arming them and using them to invade Iran. And now we are supposed to be shocked that Iran is striking those groups?

    According to [ITV News](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ITV_News “ITV News”), since the start of last year, weapons have been smuggled into western Iran to arm thousands of Kurdish volunteers, and Kurdish sources have told the outlet that US and Israeli forces were asked to provide air cover when any such ground operation begins.[\[20\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2026_Kurdish%E2%80%93Iranian_crisis#cite_note-:8-20) These reports were corroborated by [CNN](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CNN “CNN”), which stated that the [CIA](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CIA “CIA”) was working to arm Kurdish forces to spark an uprising in Iran.[\[51\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2026_Kurdish%E2%80%93Iranian_crisis#cite_note-CNN-2026a-51) According to [Axios](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Axios_\(website\) “Axios (website)”), US and Israeli officials told the outlet that the idea of supporting Iranian Kurdish factions and using them as a force for a possible ground offensive from Iraq into Iran originated with Israeli Prime Minister [Benjamin Netanyahu](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benjamin_Netanyahu “Benjamin Netanyahu”) and the [Mossad](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mossad “Mossad”), with the CIA later joining the effort.[\[52\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2026_Kurdish%E2%80%93Iranian_crisis#cite_note-52)
