the folk explanation is that it’s a holdover from when water always needed to be boiled before drinking to kill microbes

the west (mainly Europe) didn’t get that message and decided to purify water by making nearly all of it into beer, which explains a lot lol

You can essentially donate your processing power to various science projects that need it to compute protein folding simulations. I used to run it whenever I wasn’t actively using my PC. This does cost electricity and increase rate of wear and tear on the device, as with any sustained high computational load. But it’s cool! :]

1. I can make exquisitely intricate paper snowflakes, and have them turn out exactly how I visualized them.
2. I can perfectly control the browning level and inside melted-ness level when I roast marshmallows. My favorite way to do them is: warm but unmelted center surrounded by ~¼" thick melted layer, evenly medium toasted outside, with just one top corner briefly ignited and immediately extinguished for just a hint of char flavor and a bien cuit aesthetic.
