Five centuries after children were sacrificed on volcanic peaks in the Andes, chemical clues preserved in their hair and fingernails show how the empire used intoxicating blends to soothe the children during their final months

I’m beginning to think Emperors New Groove wasn’t 100% accurate

As a parent, reading stuff like this is almost unbearable. The thought of someone intentionally harming a child is so incredibly heartbreaking. We sometimes have a tendency to look back on history and thing, “man, that was crazy!” We forget that there are places today where children are treated this way. I’m so thankful to be living in a nation, society, and culture where this isn’t tolerated.

The ritual also had a political dimension, helping the Inca state establish relationships with local communities

Yes, I want to have a strong relationship with the people who drugged my kids and then sent them to die on a volcano.

Don’t be so sure that’s the nation or culture you’re living in - millions of modern people don’t mind that Abraham was about to kill his own son as a sacrifice until God stopped him.

and who influenced him to do it in the first place???

if anything, the closest to inca sacrifice rituals is Jews believing in slaughtering children to please god.

For everyone else, plied, means to basically drug people.

Plied means made pliable, as in easy to influence - it can be done with alcohol and drugs, sex, money, promising to make things great again, etc.

Is there any evidence they couldn’t say no to the drugs, not the being sacrificed

If ya gotta make the sun rise everyday with a sacrifice, it’s probably a kindness to dope them up first. (/s on the necessity of religious beliefs).

To be fair, for a lot of human history, religion made sense, we didn’t understand the world and why things happened.
