  • Posts like that are a great resource. Thanks for all the time and energy you put into promoting this place. It’s certainly appreciated.

Part of the problem is we’re fighting an uphill battle. After decades of preaching to people on the internet to use the search we’ve given them one that often can’t actually find things for them without some fiddling. New and smaller instances are particularly prone to this. If the goal is being interconnected as a feature we need better ways to make that connection user friendly and automatic.

  • There’s also the argument that people should get used to the idea of not being force fed from one source/community/etc. Redundancy also has its perks.

Lemmy’s greatest strength is also its greatest weakness imo. The decentralized nature makes it much less intuitive to navigate and use when you’re new because it just works differently to what people are used to and commonly expect.

Having multiple communities isn’t a problem if they aren’t dead imo. The problem is a user base that doesn’t have a native way to easily access everything on the fediverse (or even Lemmy) from whatever instance they register on. That leaves us with users who simply don’t know any better when they look for communities with a local search and can’t find them.

I think we need to work on retraining people to search using tools like lemmyverse, or find a way to build its functionality into the default Lemmy search. Consolidated communities only help if people are able to find them reliably and many of the users are brand new and struggle with the transition.

  • Went from Google to Proton and have since moved on from Proton. If there’s one thing I wish I would’ve thought of before switching it would’ve been not using a single provider for everything.

At the end of the day it got me off Google, but with more or less the same situation I started with. Everything I was using was housed by one company. If they go under or turn evil you’re scrambling to replace all your online services at once all over again. That isn’t something I’m comfortable with so I split my service selection up and moved to multiple companies for the services I actually use.

Having everything in one place is super convenient until something happens that makes you want or need to move again. I’m happier now and ended up paying a bit less overall which is cool.

  • Very pleased with the growth of our communities since the move to crazypeople.online almost 2 weeks ago.

!eternalplaylist@crazypeople.online is leading the way with just over 100 subscribers again. All kinds of new people have been posting music and leaving comments, it’s great to see.

!weedtime@crazypeople.online isn’t far behind with just under 100 subscribers. Lazy stoners, come on already! 💚

!pokemonTCGM@crazypeople.online has also been active since the move. With a little over 60 subscribers we’re seeing active posting and trading which is awesome! I’m hopeful the community will continue to grow as more people become hopelessly addicted to this game.

!loweffortmemes@crazypeople.online is seeing similar subscriber numbers. We were fortunate to have @Sir_Kevin@lemmy.dbzer0.com lead us off with some bangers to get things started. Awesome to see community members take the lead when a new place needs some love!

!autoracing@crazypeople.online hasn’t seen much activity but it also didn’t see much at it’s old home either. For now it’s mostly my space to post random racing videos I find on YouTube lol. More people are definitely invited though!

And on a more generic note the instance as a whole has been doing well. Some new members added and no stability issues, good times. Hopefully everyone is doing well with their projects.

  • The honest answer usually isn’t what people want to hear.

Many people come to Lemmy thinking they can maintain whatever their habits were on reddit. For most people that means lurking and voting, not much else. Lemmy isn’t really big enough yet for that to work unless you’re only interested in the dominant topics here like linux and star trek, so people quickly get discouraged because Lemmy is “empty.” As if every social media site hasn’t started the same way…

For many/most of us the communities we were used to loitering in on reddit don’t exsist or aren’t active enough to lurk in without getting bored. That means we need to shift towards content generation/creation/sharing rather than just consumption. Not everyone is going to be comfortable doing that. It also isn’t going to happen over night.

The only way Lemmy will grow and become what you/we want it to be is by sticking around and participating. For many of us that means doing different things than we were used to on reddit. Lemmy is still very much in the early stages of it’s development and culture and it’s up to the users to decide what kind of place it’s going to be. It takes time and effort, and understanding that Lemmy is not and will never be reddit.

If people want reddit, it’s still there for them. Lemmy is still forming an identity and we’re all a part of it.

  • The initial move feels a bit like you’re giving up on an old friend imo. Many of us hoped reddit would change course or stop sliding towards what they’ve become but it’s obvious now that there will be no turn around. The enshitification will continue until nothing recognizable is left.

With Lemmy and the fediverse you have the chance to make it your own and help shape it as it grows, hopefully avoiding the missteps of reddit.

Welcome to Lemmy mate. Have fun settling in to your new home.
