  • The crazy half is in control right now and there’s not much we can realistically do.

That’s defeatist. There is a lot that can be done. You could pressure your representatives to gum up congress so much with filibusters, and unnecessary votes to slow down what Trump can actually get done. You could join the democratic party with others and start demanding that they change from within. You could support local or internet grassroots campaigns who resist Trump. If the only thing you’re going to do over the next four years is wait to vote Democrat again then there’s not much you’re realistically Willing to do.

  • I’m not American so I’m not in as desperate a situation as you might be. That said, I have had the same discussions with many people and I’ve learned a few things.

One, ignoring a problem and hoping that it goes away is a totally natural coping strategy that works more often than we care to admit. It’s a perfectly appropriate coping strategy when you’re waiting out winter, but it’s maladapted to stopping fascists from knocking on your door.

Two, people only have so much bandwidth. Their jobs, kids, school work, and just existing takes up that bandwidth. When someone’s bandwidth is maxed out the only time I’ve been able to reach them is when they’re already thinking about something I have a very strong argument that aligns with their goals. Otherwise it’s a waste of time, they’re worried about getting their kids fed and in bed, they don’t have the brain power to think about how they could help overthrow the oligarchy.

Three, when those opportunities arise patience is key. Listen way more than than I speak, always keep the conversation focused on what they’re concerned about.

‘Know when to hold em, know when to fold them. Know when to walk away, know when to run.’

  • To Quote Mr. Rogers:

When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” To this day, especially in times of “disaster,” I remember my mother’s words and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers – so many caring people in this world.

  • I think you might have misunderstood the lesson that we’re taught about the Holocaust. It wasn’t important who Nazi Germany gurt, it’s what the Nazi’s did. Regardless of who they did it to. The Nazis threw away their own humanity to achieve their goals, that is always wrong. Everything else after that is just details. That’s what people are afraid of with Trump’s deportation mandate, that to actually achieve it migrants will need to be treated subhuman. To deport them as quickly as Trump wants America and American’s will have to throw away some more of their humanity. It’s not the same as Nazi Germany in that there aren’t death camps, but Trump and his allies want America to walk down that path a bit. It’s wrong.

  • Yeah, it’s kind of lost all meaning. I’ve seen Marxists call Liberals tankies, and I’ve seen Liberals calls Marxists tankies. I’ve seen right wingers call Leftists tankies, and I’ve seen Leftists call Centerists tankies. I know where the word came from, and who the first tankies were but I rarely know what a person’s intent is with that word anymore. Maybe it’s just young people slang now and I’m just too old to get it.

Because I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I’m with isn’t it anymore and what’s it seems weird and scary. And it’ll happen to you!

  • Depends on the size. A 65 year old who’s been working hard their whole life might get a small golden parachute and those ones are less unethical. CEOs and world leaders get the enormous golden chutes and there is no way to make one of those without child labour, slave labour, and other forms of exploitation.
