I basically do the same. The tiny local bookstore I like has a big table in the middle with titles picked by the owner. Something in there will be interesting. I can always just ask the owner if I’m stumped. It’s a bit easier because I’m not a single-genre reader, so I’m spoiled for choice.

I think it is part of making government agencies ineffective to prove their ideology that these agencies should be abolished and replaced with private companies (or not at all). That way, they can say come election time, “See? Government can’t do these things well. We should eliminate these agencies.” Many people will forget they are also the reason the agencies are shitty.
They have tried this with underfunding them in the past mostly. This is a much more direct approach.
If invulnerability means not being subjected to all the forces eventually pulling apart and decaying all matter, I’m still on board. I’ll roll the dice that things eventually find a way to come back around, whatever that means.
I’m not sure if there needs to be fewer subjects, but I feel like there should be much more focus on why what students are learning matters. Passing a standardized test is not a goal kids care about. This invariably has to be at the expense of rote information since there is only so much time, though I think that is a worthwhile trade.
Nobody cares about the exact year that Mehmet II conquered Constantinople. But the impact of that on world history is both interesting and significant. I only had one history teacher before college who told students he didn’t care about exact years; if you could give the general period that was sufficient.
I don’t go to McDonald’s very often, but the location near me has remarkably good service. I never use the drive thru, so maybe that’s it. The one time I thought my order got messed up I had actually ordered the wrong thing, and they offered to replace it for free when I came back in to order the correct thing.

The Crowleys are definitely depicted as kind lords, though the show contrasts them several times with other less humane counterparts. I don’t have the education to rate its historical accuracy, however.
I got sort of an inverse impression of Downton Abbey. For me, it was about inevitable change, since practically every single truth held by the most conservative characters is at some point bent or entirely overturned, often by themselves. Literally all of the gentry are huge hypocrites.
It also spends a good amount of time creating parallels in the lives of the different classes that, for me, underscored how there was nothing fundamentally special about the aristocracy besides their wealth. Wealth that they never earned and only held onto because a peasant Irish driver who banged their daughter forcibly removed their heads from their assess.
It just doesn’t seek to accomplish all this by making the upper class into Disney villains, since that’s rarely how people actually are. But I never got the impression the show was trying to say this is how things should have or had to have been.
You are correct in my opinion. I don’t like how many people assume it’s a green arrow or that you must go if able, but I wouldn’t give it up.
Yeah it’s one of the most challenging parts. The process of getting therapy is not set up to be easy for the kind of people who need it. Availability is the most limiting factor these days, so if you don’t get a good match, you could be stuck waiting months for another try. I got pretty lucky on my second try a few years ago, but my wife just gave up trying to find someone. It’s hard to blame her.
Seriously. You aren’t really managing your employees if they have to organize resource shortages for you. At my job, I tell my colleagues to just take time off and, like me, list a few close co-workers as people to contact in case of emergencies in their OOO reply. Nothing is life-or-death, so people can deal with waiting. It’s not like anyone is taking off months straight.
I think the Instagram restaurants serving spaghetti in a garbage bin or soup in a beer hat would give that list a run for its money.
Developing standards, best practices, conventions, etc. One of the most valuable people on my team wrote some incredible quality automations a few years ago, and the only coding he does at this point is updates to them when necessary. By volume, he’s easily bottom 5% this year, but we’d be much worse off without his expertise/advise and the fact he advocates for the team.
This is classic shit management metrics. It would take some time for the rot to set in after using a cudgel approach to a team, and by the time it did, the assholes responsible would have fucked off elsewhere with their huge bonuses.

I don’t think he even attempted to do math. Someone asked him about it and said what the current budget was, and he just rectally sourced 2 trillion. I assume he said that because it’s big enough to sound huge, but less than half of spending so people don’t panic that everything will be cut.
It’s meaningless bullshit until he actually says specifically what will be cut. Republicans have been claiming they can cut huge chunks of spending for years, but it never materializes. They only know how cut government income without paying for it.
