2·2 days agoYep, I saw that. Again, no mention of OS, which is what all the news was about. This just feels like them saying “I’m not dead yet.”

14·2 days agoThe news I saw said they were dumping the move to Linux, and resuming Windows use. This post says nothing about the underlying OS in use (neither “Windows,” nor “Linux” exist on the page).

DeGoogle Yourself@lemmy.ml•Google bussness hours and reviews are finally getting SOME sort of competition
4·3 days agoI’ve been using it off & on. While it’s gotten better, it’s still a bit much of a battery-killer, comparatively speaking. It’s surprising how decent it is, but that’s definitely preventing me from adopting it full time yet.
Also, I find it copying Google too closely. For example, I’ve never understood why we can’t just get directions without all the “alerts” that are over-reported by people just for Internet points. I hate already being a mile into a ten-mile construction zone, and being told there’s “construction ahead” repeatedly throughout the rest of the construction. It’s just so stupid and incredibly annoying. It’d be really nice to have the ability to select which warnings get spoken, and maybe disable all warnings for a selectable period (like 10 or 20 mins or miles).
There’s other stuff, too, but they’re far more minor to me. Until the battery sucking issue is resolved, I just can’t be bothered. I’m keeping an eye on it, though.
I’d tell you to slow down on the alcohol, but it’s “lite,” and the occasion warrants the indulgence so… carry on.

Technology@lemmy.world•Pope Leo calls for the disarmament of AI: ‘Machines are tools, not persons’English
3·3 days agoNow that’s something I can almost fully agree with. They are far from the only religious organization don’t even come close to living up to their claimed ideals, however, so singling them out for that feels a bit unfair to me.
Religion in general seems to be slowly declining in popularity, tho. That can lead to better informed and reasonable people, which ultimately makes for a better future in the long run. AI is negating that “better informed” part, however, and that’s a huge concern to me as without it much of humanity will wind up like lambs in the slaughterhouse.

41·3 days agoI’m “defending” nothing. I called out your false equivalence, while pointing out they’ve both done damage. You, on the other hand, found only what you wanted to find.
It’s obvious you’re very angry at the church, and there’s no argument that they have been far less repentant than they should have been by now. That doesn’t make them automatically the worst evil in a world full-to-bursting with “very bad things.”
Al can be no less evil even if it is the new kid on the block with far less history of abuse behind it. It can be considered worse, in fact, because it is (or soon will be) affecting many more people’s lives than the Catholic Church. People can leave the Catholic Church behind. AI? Not so much. It’s here to stay, and the current battle is just over in what form it will continue to affect the entire world.

DeGoogle Yourself@lemmy.ml•Google bussness hours and reviews are finally getting SOME sort of competition
2·3 days agoYou can anonymously get Google place data free (unlike your suggestion) by opening maps in a browser like Firefox Focus that forgets everything each time you exit it. You can also use one of a few apps on F-Droid like GMaps WV that use an isolated webview to do similarly (although you should be aware this is less secure than Firefox Focus because WebRTC can’t be blocked this way & the app’s cache must be manually cleared).

3·3 days agoSorry, but traffic info is an absolute must-have if you drive for a living. Even if you don’t, getting stuck in traffic jams is a waste of fuel/energy, time, & sanity. It also is dependent upon where you are as some areas are better engineered for traffic issues than others (the older the major city, the worse it tends to be - it’s particularly bad in the northeastern US).

Technology@lemmy.world•Pope Leo calls for the disarmament of AI: ‘Machines are tools, not persons’English
41·3 days agoI doubt anyone thought either was vindicated. I’m against religion in general myself. In particular, the Catholic church’s denial of human sexuality to its own officers is rationally absurd, and a prime cause of its own problems in that area, IMHO.

22·3 days agoThanks for reiterating the “you are the enemy” part I explicitly set aside. Those people never had “sane and sensible principles” to distance themselves from, which is why I’m being pragmatic in the fact it’s going to happen whether we like it or not. My suggested approach - considering about half the human population suffers from conservative “principles” - is to at least try to force them to be as cautious about their approach as possible.
