I had the opposite experience. Left a shitty blue-collar job (it was even a union job, but the union was toothless and mostly just existed to get work from places that would only place orders with union shops) for an office job.

The hours are better, the pay is better, the co-workers are less bigoted, and I no longer smell like grease and sweat whenever I come home.

There will always be trade-offs in any job. Whether it’s blue-collar, white-collar, or whatever ever other collar you can think of. There is no perfect job type for everyone.

Their response wasn’t to fix the problem, it was to find a better way to subjugate people. Clearly his methods aren’t the solution. They’re just an easy way to pass the problem off to someone else without you having to put in the effort to help fix it yourself.

Only the 10% or so that paid attention to “nerd stuff”.

All the rest are, at best boomer level, at worst smug about being at boomer level.

Probably someone even worse.

Tools do not have morality or ethics, only people do. Some people use tools in a morally and/or ethically questionable manner, either for profit or because it amuses them.

There’s a reason the original reddit community banned sales pitches, and took themselves off /r/all.

Dude was unhinged from the beginning. His early acts could be defensible because we can kind of agree with the words… but it was always about him. He couched it in defense of others, but it was always about “Look at me” for him.

I would say that’s not a reason to take him out of memes, but it’s also not a reason to think of him as ever having been a “good person”.

The problem is he’s only making money, even his “charitable” actions are made in the interest of creating an entire environment that is more exploitative by his investments.

He did an AMA on reddit a few years ago, and when asked about his charitable ventures and investments, he mostly just made reference to teams of financiers doing “what they thought was best”.

Maybe he’s doing what he thinks is best… but that doesn’t necessarily mean it is what’s best for most people.

Frankly, his money would be best spent lobbying for progressive policies and funding candidates who fight for the working class. Everything else is a staying action at best, and “moral exploitation” at the least.

That’s basically the entire Republican platform right there.

I mean it is a science fantasy world, but I’d imagine if you get into the gritty realistic parts energy weapons still use… y’know… energy. And when you’re part of a massive space fascist bureaucracy, there’s some number cruncher counting turbolaser bolts.

Even in punctuated equilibrium, it’s over a long period. A certain specific mutation can be considered quick, but the overall evolution is still slow.

But it’s still not relevant to this situation.

China is not quickly becoming a successor, they are slowly edging their way there. Just because you’re only paying attention to it now doesn’t mean it was in any way quick.

That’s how slow works. Lots of effort over a long period for something to come to full effect at a later date.

It’d be quick if they just plopped down a bunch of capital on becoming the worlds foremost everything within a short period of time, which is not what this is.
