  • Essentially blowback for decades of US military adventurism in the region. Bin Laden’s theory was that an attack that’s big enough would cause the US government to overreact and overreach, imploding the American Empire because Americans wouldn’t accept their civil liberties being taken away and Americans coming back from abroad in coffins.

Obviously Bin Laden was wrong about how much Americans would just be ok with everything the government ended up doing, and didn’t achieve his stated goal.

  • They were designed to be only used for the administration of social security. Since they were sending monthly checks, they needed a way to know that the person going to the office and saying their address changed was who they said they were. This was at a time before driver’s licences were common and they didn’t have any other type of ID, and there were just a lot fewer people.

Later on the SSN started to be used by banks and other entities even though it was never meant for that, and the risks associated with the relatively insecure design just compounded, because instead of just fraudulently claiming someone else’s social security checks (which, unless the target died, would probably be figured out within a month), it opened up all sorts of extra avenues for fraud.

  • Linux was also the only way to make sure Valve was viable long term. Eventually Windows was going to have an Xbox store built in and would’ve basically been a monopoly on PC gaming, cutting out steam altogether. I think windows now sort of does have that, but it can’t compete with Steam quite yet.
