Instead of using a PPU on the GPU, most people have focused on GPGPU physics calculations instead. The idea behind PhysX was a difficult one to launch in the first place. Given that most chip real-estate is going to these VPUs, I’m not surprised at all that they ditched the PPU for a more generalized version.

AI has been here for years now before you even knew it. Reddit employed fake users for a long time to make the site seem more active than it actually was. Before AI, they just had mass amounts of people pushing things. Now they can do it on the cheap.

This is or was part of their anti-spam/flooding protection. In the server admin dashboard, you can require a phone number on the account or you can disable it and allow users without verified phone numbers to participate.

They do not require this just for a discord account last I checked. It’s likely due to whatever discord server you’re trying to join.

This must be the most horrid type of programming work available.

First: You have to deal with Win32 APIs. Which, they’ve kept certain bugs because it break legacy programs.

Second: You have to deal with game programmers. Which, program things in such a way that GPU driver programmers, have to write SPECIAL drivers, so that your game is treated the way these programmers THOUGHT it was supposed to work…

Honestly Arch is fine as a beginner distro for the right person - The benefit of arch is the rolling release model and the fact that it’s closer to edge than other distros. No; I don’t want to use that package that’s 6 months out of date – Compile it myself? Well, then why would I run a ‘stable’ distro then?

Someone being on Linux instead of Windows is enough of a win for me. I’m going to praise whatever way they want to approach it, none of this purism shit.

Likewise, SteamOS is based on Arch because of the way it’s architected in the first place. It’s fine to want that. Now…if this were Gentoo on the other hand…

You’re right it’s not the same thing as critical thinking, but it is a skill we’ve lost. How many skills have we lost throughout history due to machines and manufacturing?

This is the same tale over and over again - these people weren’t using critical thinking to begin with if they were trusting a prediction engine with their tasks.

How many phone numbers do you know off of the top of your head?

In the 90s, my mother could rattle off 20 or more.

But they’re all in her phone now. Are luddites going to start abandoning phones because they’re losing the ability to remember phone numbers? No, of course not.

Either way, these fancy prediction engines have better critical thinking skills than most of the flesh and bone people I meet every day to begin with. The world might actually be smarter on average if they didn’t open their mouths.

I browse it all the time and interact with lots of communities, but the problem is that I turn into an “outside voice” that has more equal-handed views on things, and as soon as I interact with one of these communities that are moving as a unit in lock-step with one another, I upset them and they start following me around places and harassing me.

So yeah. Lemmy is quite…uh…special in that regard.

But hey, at least I don’t get banned from 120 communities because I replied to someone once somewhere in some random thread.
