Currently only have pictures and documents stored, so everything easily fits on 1tb. One copy on my homeserver (unencrypted), one copy on my laptop (Luks encrypted), and one copy with rsync and a raspi at my parents (unencrypted). Might change encryption strategies to all luks.

Obligatory Framework plug comment. Doesn’t matter which architecture you go for, they support Linux ootb and there are community threads for almost every distro. You can also upgrade it in a few years :D

I just recently bought my framework and would not like to upgrade this soon. However, I really want a Qualcomm Mobo for my framework to come out. Or a competitive risk V, but that’s probably a pipe dream until I actually need an upgrade

Aside from that, more important than the brand is the laptop model. Some parts (like fingerprint, camera or touchpad) may not work with linux, and that depends on the model, not the brand. So I’d suggest searching for the model you’re interested in, and then combining that search with Arch (usually has the latest - but sometimes unstable - packages, so you’ll see what’s probably possible), Debian (wide user base, but older packages, so you’ll see what definitely works) and then EndeavourOS, to see any issues that may come up that are really relevant for you.
