In 2020 during the summer I was feeling pretty depressed due to obviously Covid but also my father dying and a lot of riots were happening nearby. I was generally not in a good place and wanted a change to get out of the rut I was in.

I decided to move into an apartment exactly like this but near the beach. When I say near I mean I could see the ocean from my window. It was exactly this size and configuration. It cost $900 a month back then.

The problem wasn’t as much the size as the people you live with. It attracts either young adults who want to party or older people with big life problems, like addiction, divorce, mental health issues.

The place I lived was an old wooden building so it was very easy to hear my neighbors. I didn’t sleep well the entire time I lived there…

The communal bathroom was constantly dirty despite having a service come in daily and they had laundry room that was constantly backing up and malfunctioning.

The same place today goes for nearly $2k. I lasted two months before moving into a slightly larger place with a private bath, a left after my lease was up a year later.

Living at the beach was great, but I’ll never live in a place like this again.

Ah alright. My point is OP is asking what can be done in other distros that can’t be done in Mint and your answer was have the entire configuration be in plain text. I completely agree that if you want that kind of reproducibility NixOS is the most refined, well established, and best way to handle this. However to answer OP I would say this is possible in Mint but just much more painful.

Why not? Isn’t this the whole concept of Bash Script, Ansible, Terraform, etc… I mean it can be as simple as a git repo that pulls down an install script then syncs your dot files. What am I missing? If you’re referencing Nix, you can also have that on Mint.

I think this kind of thing is great. The policies and procedures that have been developed for the internet are going to have flaws. The internet was/is a new technology in the big picture. You can’t expect the first few drafts of how to run it to be perfect. There are going to be exceptions, edge cases and inconsistencies in any system designed to run indefinitely. Tech companies are operated like any other company and have a wide range of employees. Also not every tech position is highly employable. I know from personal experience in tech middle management that many employees are very easy to replace and have very common skill sets that are oversaturated in the market. Many many tech workers are absolutely operating in survival mode in 2024.

Psychopath is being used in a colloquial way here and not an exact diagnosis. Even if they are actual psychopaths they are known for being very charismatic and there are a lot of sadomasochistic people in the world who are motivated by punishment.

Further the people who work directly for these people want to be them, so they see it as just part of the process.

Another factor is money, it’s a motivator. Those who work lower down the org chart can often be desperate, struggling to get by and get used to the punishment, convincing themselves that it would be worse elsewhere.

The Idea that life is short and work just isn’t worth it comes from a place of privilege and the luxury of time for self reflection. Something not everyone can afford when one lives in survival mode.
