Reddit -> Beehaw until I decided I didn’t like older versions of Lemmy (though it seems most things I didn’t like are better now) -> kbin.social (died) -> kbin.run (died) -> fedia.

It mostly gets used to watch YouTube during my nightly bath and when I’m traveling.
Smartphone is my least common choice. PC most of the time, smart tv for YouTube, tablet, then phone.
True. They also mention the person’s rural upbringing and then moving to the city. That mirrors my experience and my hearing issues pre-date using noise canceling headphones. I always had a rough time anywhere there were lots of people and noise, but it just wasn’t super common previously (I grew up in rural Ohio and have lived in some big US cities.followed by nearly a decade in Tokyo).
Did the boomboxes-next-to-heads and the walkmans of the '80s and discmans of the '90s not count? I think a lot of game boy users also used headhpones.
I actually didn’t use them that much at all, but I still have trouble hearing with background noise. Noise-cancelling headphones have actually been an amazing thing in my life because (a) it helps overstimulation and anxiety and (b) it actually helps me hear someone talking to me because it filters out the other stuff. I suspect my problems are a combination of mostly-neurological (ADHD and probably (though not officially) ASD) and maybe impacted by loud concerts and general aging-related stuff. I can still hear really high-pitched sounds and the like whereas many of my peers around my age and younger can’t as well, but it’s all mud to me when there’s a lot of sound.
Just as a reminder, it’s also good to ask “is there any big disadvantage?”. Sometimes, a thing evolves traits that don’t help but don’t cause enough harm to stop being passed on.
Is it called the Jetta there? I know some cars have regional model names.
I’ve gone through all the stages of grief and I don’t live there. I honestly don’t know why it does or even should bother me. I guess there is some part of me that hates injustice and has some nostalgia for an America, real or always imagined, that was trying to do its best for the free world (even though that was, in many cases, found to be objectively not true later).
If anything, it seems like they may finally get rid of some of the stuff that makes it difficult to impossible for US people living overseas to use certain retirement vehicles without committing tax fraud (PFICs; PFICs everywhere and I can’t put income into my US tax-advantaged vehicles due to rules on that side), but potentially doing one thing that helps me does not do anything to assuage my revulsion and rage at the current situation.
When Epic first launched, they didn’t have payment processors in a number of countries. Want to play that Epic exclusive game? Well too fucking bad because you can’t buy it. That one frustrated me as someone who lives outside of some of the major countries. Also, the people behind it are absolute tools in my opinion and I’d rather not support them.
I have done that year after year. The chucklefuck Ds in office now who can’t be bothered to look up from their insider trading to do literally anything useful are never getting another vote from me. Anyone who lands on the next ballot with a D next to their name is far from guaranteed to get my vote. If the Ds refuse to do anything at all about this brewing constitutional crisis and ending of the rule of law. Voting more of the same in isn’t any kind of change, particularly if they just let those in charge shit on everything.
BBS on a commodore64 and a tiny bit of compuserve.
I blocked all the communities as they came up. I guess it’s meant to compete with TikTok or yt shorts or whatever, but I’ve never been into that type of content and what I saw here didn’t change that
Yeah, most US salad dressing are either based on oil or mayo (which is also somewhat based on oil). Ranch is mayo, sour cream (or similar), and a bunch of dried herbs/spices. I think it’s the sour cream part I never cared for, but I also don’t much like US mayo. I thought I hated all mayo until I had Japanese Kewpie.
But just check out my cesium siding and TURN OFF THAT SPRINKLER RIGHT N
Some sushi in Japan has mayo and such on it. That’s just grosser mayo, so it’s not that far removed.
I don’t think anyone is weird for eating or liking them, but they’re definitely not for me.
I grew up making tiny spaghetti-on-garlic-bread sandwiches whenever we had both. Noodle sandwiches are definitely a thing in Japan (yakisoba pan is one)
I’m used to the smell at this point, but eating it still makes me gag. There’s some flavor compound in there that, with anything other than a tiny bite, tells my body that this thing needs to be expelled.
Cold pizza was generally a texture issue for me: congealed grease is not pleasant. To me, anything that I could generally eat cold has better flavor and texture when heated so I would never opt for the (to me) inferior version unless it were unavoidable.
I’ve drunk with some people who did voice acting of animes here in Japan. They generally work a lot and don’t get compensated nearly well enough. Salaries here are generally lower than somewhere like the US, but people in entertainment and arts often have a rough time.
