No worries! I have reasons for not installing Telegram myself, but I’m curious what your reasons are? What arguments have you made to him so far and what were his responses?

Dissuade = discourage. Is that what you mean?
I laughed out loud when I read the title of this post. When I’m helping my customers with their domain DNS records, I always analogise DNS to “a phone book for the internet”. I love that we’ve come full circle and phone books are “DNS for the phone system” 😂 (also goddamn does this make me feel old 😭)

I’m not the one who asked but thank you for summarising! It’s late here and I’m too tired for a whole video, so this helped me. Those results are interesting. I’ve been planning on switching from Windows to Linux as my main OS; last time I tried was before the latest AM5/RDNA4 drivers were integrated, so I had terrible instability like Plasma crashing all the time and occasional lockups. I installed Windows 11 so I could at least get my work done, but if my environment can stay stable then it might be time to finish the move.
No pretty to influence it is incorrect. You do not have the power to change it. However, if you leave, you are a data point. If lots of people leave, they are also data points. Data influences decisions at most companies. This statement does not imply the data is read correctly, nor that the decisions made in light of the interpretation of the data are the best ones.
Your difficulty here is the qualifier “better”. We can create a different icon. A more modern icon. A cooler icon. But there is not a better icon, not until fewer people understand the floppy means save than those who have no idea what it is. And because it’s self-reinforcing (“the save icon is a floppy disk because floppy means save”), that’s not likely in my estimation.

Or just accept that not everyone will be having a secure conversation every time at first, but more will be secured as more and more people like me convince our family members to use it and eventually we transition everyone away from SMS?
No, of course not, why would we build a critical mass of users like that?
Since they removed SMS support almost my entire family and my friends uninstalled signal, except a few who keep it to talk to me, and my half dozen friends privacy-conscious enough to care. Dozens of people, down to eight if you don’t count me, in my circles alone. Objectively, removing SMS support harmed Signal’s popularity and made everyone less secure. The argument for why they did it was at best myopic and also, in my opinion, utter bullshit.
Have you tried the original Everspace? It’s a roguelike so it’s basically randomised missions. Rebel Galaxy might also scratch the itch but it’s more “naval” in it’s combat - you move on a 2d plane and fire broadsides, rather than dogfighting.
It also contributes heavily to the formation of aphthous mouth ulcers. For anyone suffering them like I used to (which is to say “badly”): if this is the first time you’re hearing about it, look for tooth paste with no SLS. It doesn’t matter if the L is Lauryl or Laureth, that shit is drying out the mucous membranes in your mouth, making them more prone to damage, and thereby giving you ulcers. Kroger/King Soopers have a generic that’s SLS-free, but Sensodyne Pronamel is one that’s usually SLS-free if you can’t find a generic. If you have an ulcer right now:
It’ll hurt like hell, but doing this daily will heal the wound in a few days instead of a few weeks.
As well, most people brush too hard; some of that “clean” feeling is coming from gum trauma from brushing too hard. Holding the toothbrush between forefinger and thumb limits the amount of pressure you can apply, reducing the risk of damaging your gums.
Finally, flossing gets the biofilm out from between your teeth; brushing gets it off the exposed surfaces; and peroxide-based mouthwash is a nuclear firestorm to scour the bacterial population. Do all three each night at least, and your breath will be better than anyone you know.
Creatures that yawn are not under stress
Why are you reading Internet comments in the same context as you’d read literature?
I dunno, hive mind is starting to sound pretty good right about now.
Sketch? That’s pretty funny, I could see doing that for an in-joke with someone they were close to.
we just need to show them the truth
I once read this on lemmy and it stuck with me. I think it applies here:
The autistic trait that bites me in the ass most often is the unshakable belief that if I can just show someone the truth, they’ll believe me.
True for me, and worse, I never seem to learn.
It’s a little hard to read but I think it says:
There seem to be health concerns about quaternary ammonium compounds, so in looking at alternatives I found reference to hypochlorous acid which is available in product form:
Seems safe and effective: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypochlorous_acid
There doesn’t appear to be a reason not to mix hypochlorous and citric acids - it’s not like mixing ammonia and chlorine which makes deadly chlorine gas - but I’m not sure if mixing them would improve efficacy.
Just don’t use hypochlorous acid in your dishwasher, it starts to decompose into chlorine gas (and water, but the chlorine gas is the worry) above approximately 100°F.
The brick was probably just citric acid. Buy a bag from your local supermarket, you’ll find it in the kitchen section probably as a crystalline powder, and dump some of that in the humidifier water to also prevent buildup.
Fun fact, you can also run a larger amount of it through your empty dishwasher instead of those dishwasher cleaner packs; those are mostly citric acid too. Cheaper, and no horrible fake lavender scent or whatever it is they like to put in the packs.
Edit: the bricks could also have been hypochlorous acid which is available from various vendors:
