AI is meant to automate the boring stuff so we can make art and write stories. Instead, it’s been used to make art and write stories so all we’re left with is the boring stuff

No technology has ever resulted in lighter workloads for the average person. Different, and sometimes less strenuous, but never less time consuming.

      Washing machine.

Also, lighter work loads and less time consuming are different arguments - unless you mean no technology has ever resulted in neither, which is a rather bold statement.

Before washing machines, people would hand off washing to professionals. Now the expectation is that the person who can afford it must wash things themselves. More time spent on that.

          Uh, maybe for rich people…

Let me introduce you to the washboard and the bucket.

Less time washing clothes means you’ll have more time to knit sweaters and cook food. It’s still the same amount of work, but it’s demanding in different ways.

These tasks were already on the to-do list prior to the invention of the washing machine.

It is true, however, that the day didn’t get any shorter so most people did fill up that extra free time with other tasks because most people consider doing nothing to be quite boring.

The to-do list is nearly infinite, so usually only the high priority tasks get done. Everything outside the top 10 may get done eventually or get totally ignored even though it would be really good to do those as well. Technology has expanded the list of things that realistically can be done today, this week or even during the year. It’s still the same amount of work, but you get more results.
