with how good ATLA was

This is my issue with the fandom.

ATLA was not perfect! It had a lot of immaturity, and crude jokes. It had bad or slow episodes. It had a self-indulgent habit of trying to introduce/develop too many characters, dues ex machinas, plot holes, and crappy video quality even on the blu-ray, which I have spent many hours trying to fix. And on mercurial, angry, inconsistently acting, constantly complaining and yelling, constantly losing main characters that make annoyingly impulsive, irrational decisions… I’m referencing Zuko, not Korra, and he’s one of my favorite characters ever. I could go on and on tearing every little detail and flaw of ATLA open.

I swear, every single sentence on the Avatar subreddit these days is prefixed with “ATLA is so incredible but,” every critique sent to oblivion (except for a few memes like the Lion Turtle), and it was not always like that. It reminds me of the Star Wars fandom, which I peeked my head into after being blown away by Andor… only to find people tearing it apart because it’s not like the original movies or something.

So… yeah. Hate to be salty, but there is some salt.

And this isn’t just about LoK either. It’s NATLA too, and even the fantastic novels. And it’s already starting with Seven Havens.

There’s just so much else going on! Are Trump/Musk like actually subverting the government and triggering a constitutional crisis? Is he actually gonna follow through with the crazier plans like strongarming Canada or colonizing Gaza? Are we getting pulled into a war? Will there be an economic crisis from some huge dysfunction? I am worried because Trump genuinely doesn’t seem to grasp a lot of things, especially foreign policy or technical matters, and worst case scenarios are pretty bad.

Like, if you told me, with certainty, there was a high probability of another 9/11 this month, I would freak out… But it wouldn’t even snuff out all those other stuff going on! It wouldn’t be like a Bush moment that defines his presidency and the era, it would just turn into a big controversial mess.

If it’s more like a unabomber attack or a smaller scale thing, honestly, it would blend into the stream of shock news. Trump would probably blame it on Democrats and politicize it, and everyone would take the bait. That sounds horrible, but it’s plausible.

Again, I’m an American, so don’t trust me, but…

I dunno? I could see Iran funding another assassination attempt (and I can hardly blame them if Trump goes through with the Gaza idea), and obviously there will be some holes in security agencies from firings, maybe a few local people who get pushed over the edge… but a terrorist attack seems low on our list of upcoming problems? Anti-terrorism efforts are still functioning, as far as I know.

What you might’ve seen in a lot of media is that pulling USAID and some other stuff will destabilize regions and turn some into terrorist breeding grounds, which could be true. The consquences of that may take some time to manifest though, maybe even past Trump’s term.

Americans, on average, are totally ignorant. Don’t believe what we say lol.

I’ve watched the Avatar fandom for years, and discussion of tlok has grown more toxic and toxic. I’d say that does not represent the average viewer, especially those that stepped away for awhile.

The comment threads from the episode premieres are like a totally different fandom.

I so strongly disagree. LoK was awesome. Even years past the shows, Korra and Zuko are still two of my favorite fictional characters ever.

LoK fans who actually participate in any of the modern fandom are so jaded. It’s like Star Wars, where the original gets put on a higher and higher pedestal (by the fandom) as the years drag by, and every tiny thing about the sequels fry under microscopes and nostalgia.

And /r/thelastairbender is so… I dunno the word, but I haven’t checked it in months. It’s like everyone has a short attention span and keeps asking the same things without a single search. No interest in deep lore or speculation, lots of misinformation parroted, and repetitive, almost reverent fawning over ATLA. It wasn’t like this during the LoK premiere.

Tumblr and other art feeds are still nice though. Meanwhile, I’m over here shamelessly writing out a Seven Havens fic on Ao3. At peace.

Honestly, its because the subreddit and social media are super toxic.

Look in the premiere Reddit comments, and people mostly loved LoK.

There are really local good video models for Musk and Trump now.

I think the joke is that Trump/Musk are homophobic. It doesn’t glorify it.

If this were just two random guys, it’d be a fine addition to Lemmy.

It’s honestly not that big a deal, as it’s not like knowing anything about how it was trained (beyond the config) would help you modify it. It’s still highly modifiable. It’s not like anyone can afford to replicate it.

It would be nice to publish the hyperparameters for research purposes, but… shrug.

I think a subset of the exact training data/hyperparameters would help with quantization-aware-training, maybe, but that’s all I got.

You have to understand, most Americans have no idea this is going on, or at least the extent. We live in an information dystopia.

Does that make us idiots? Yeah. But I think “disloyal” is the wrong word, and in fact many Americans are just overly loyal to the feeds and influencers warping their heads.

The bigger issue is most of the population isn’t aware of this.

This is one example of many, but people are still largely OK with Trump. America is stuck in filter bubbles like you wouldn’t believe, and it’s getting worse.

I… Don’t know how to fix that. I’d fuck up Facebook, Twitter, or cable news at any opportunity, but they rule people’s minds now.

I like how there’s not a horde of American’s definding America on Lemmy.

Even elsewhere, in more conservative forums, it seems more like trolling, not kool-aid drinking, gaslighting, or being an “American Tankie.” There’s little whaaaboutism, is what they wanted.
