Depression is a social relation. Just because blue team won doesn’t mean your relationship to society has changed. Democrats and Republicans both agree on capitalism, they differ on implementation but they don’t want to end capitalism.

Under capitalism, a human is only valuable if they are productive. If a human is unproductive, then they have less, zero, or even negative value depending on how one approaches the topic.

Under capitalism, your function is to serve people who can pay you. You are replaceable always, and the less you’re replaceable, the more pressure is placed to make you replaceable. The people who need you the most - the poor, the children, the sick, the elderly - are most often the people with the least money to pay you. The people with the most money to pay you don’t need you personally, they just need a bunch of people to operate their profit engines, and many or even most of those profit engines are genuinely anti-social.

Your depression has nothing to do with who is in office and mostly to do with the fact that society wants you working or dead.

The Democrats didn’t arrive at authoritarianism throuth political pressure. They aren’t going to abandon it via political pressure. Authoritarianism is required to protect hyper profits, protect US colonies abroad, protect the state against the racialized and genocided seeking justice and reparations. The USA is authoritarian by its very nature and the Democrats are a party of the USA.

Correct opening statement, incorrect analysis. The Democrats are not anti-authoritarian. Obama still has deported more people in his 8 years than Trump in his 6. Biden still has deported more in his 4 years than Obama’s 8. Trump’s deportation Czar (Tom Homan) was first appointed to the position by Obama.

Obama launched a war of aggression against Libya, following in the same footsteps as Bush and honestly the Italians (including Mussolini). He used NATO to keep attacking Libya as a way to make sure it could keep happening despite the backlash.

Democratic congress critters have been sanctioning the world’s poor for 50 years in a bi-partisan consensus with the Republicans. Sanctions from the US have killed 40M people in those 50 years. The Democrats remain unrepentant and believe starving children and the elderly and the sick remains a “non-authoritarian” alternative to war.

It was the Democrats that developed the Crime Bill, propagated the myth of the “super predator” and intensified the racialized mass incarceration of the US.

The US today, just on prison population alone, is worse than Russia, China, Hungary, Nicaragua, Panama. But worse, the US’s prison population today is larger per capita than the height of the Soviet GULAG system. And that’s JUST the prison population. The US police state has twice the number of people under constant surveillance and monitoring and active management under their parole system. That’s literally 300% more people being managed by the US criminal justice system than any other country in the world, with worse recidivism rates than pretty much anyone. And the US is the only country that charges prisoners (not all prisoners) a day rate for being in prison, like a hotel, and everyone who can’t afford it leaves prison with massive debt that they have to repay and the state criminal justice system monitors them while they pay it back and garnishes their wages.

Neither party has put a meaningful dent in the prison system. It has been built by a bi-partisan coalition for the last 50 years into the world’s most authoritarian criminal justice system.

Democrats aren’t anti-authoritarian. They just pander to the anti-authoritarian sensibilities of people via messaging and aesthetics. As you said in your post, they are smarter authoritarians. So smart they just got the whole country to vote for them en masse despite all of the above.

It sounds like the two of you have different coping strategies for trauma and that those two coping strategies are incompatible. You can’t make her do anything. Either she can be there for you the way you need her to, or she can’t.

First place I would start is your local historical society. That would be your local nexus of all the people that might find that stuff interesting. Every author, researcher, and college student writing a paper that looked at your home town has gone through the historical society at least once, so they have the best chance of referring you to someone who might interested. Then history department of the closest colleges and universities you have to you.

That’s the best I can think of though

You may find that you would benefit from trauma-informed therapy or counseling. You may find value in EMDR, in somatic experiencing, in yoga nidra, in drumming circles, in folk dancing, or in several other things.

I would recommend you do not treat yourself as though you’re just like any other “normal” person and that you can just get some good sleep, eat well, exercise, have a job, and everything will be just fine.

You are likely working through heavy stuff that most other people are not working through. And you deserve to treat yourself well, with kindness and compassion.

Voting is structurally a ritual of mutual agreement to respect and accept the outcomes of the vote, even if the outcome of the vote is that the people you selected direct the world’s most evil military to commit the highest possible crimes humanity has ever invented. Yes, trauma is so poorly understood that what you are describing is what mostly everyone with trauma-induced pathologies is experiencing right now. If it doesn’t fit a DSM diagnosis perfectly, or the literature doesn’t have a clear prescription for addressing it, you’re bounced out of systems so that they can save money.
