… where every platform communicates with every other platform. i’ve rarely ever seen a post from mastodon on here, and even if it’s technically possible, it doesn’t seem that it happens very often.

likewise, i’ve rarely if ever seen a post from lemmy on mastodon. these two platforms just don’t seem to interact much.

the fediverse is already very small. fragmenting it even further by having multiple services that basically don’t talk to each other is not good. we need to either (a) aggressively find a way to bridge certain lemmy communities to be more visible on mastodon, especially location-based communities, or (b) i think that i’ll have to decide to only use mastodon in the future, because that’s where all my irl-friends are (yes i have those too, i do not only exist in a terminally online state :) and because mastodon is bigger already and that’s why i think that it has a bigger chance of taking off.

so, what do i suggest should happen?

especially for location-based communities (australia, london, darmstadt, …) it should be more probable for people living in these locations to draw use out of the lemmy community. maybe it’s just a question of showing lemmy content from these communities on mastodon home pages, or auto-subscribing mastodon users to nearby lemmy communities. something like that.

I don’t particularly agree with this.

Having different interfaces does mean multiple accounts across services is better, but I don’t see “one account for everything” as something important for the Fediverse per se.

In fact, I really like that they’re interoperable at all. I can post something on my PieFed account then boost it on my Mastodon account. I can upvote a post I think is cool, and if I think it’s really cool, I can boost it directly on Mastodon.

I love being able to comment on PeerTube videos or Lemmy threads with my Mastodon account, or to reply to my friends on my PieFed account.

PieFed also lets you follow Mastodon accounts, so I can comment on the posts of people I follow on PieFed if I want to.

I keep my Lemmy and my mastodon separate. For one thing, I don’t use Mastodon to socialize or have discussions. So it’s mostly strictly read only for me.

For another, when I did try out having them in the same thread it got confusing fast because sometimes things weren’t clearly delineated and character limits caught me up short more than once.

  • I don’t know that this is an unpopular opinion as much as an uninformed one.

Lemmy and mastodon are capable of interacting. Activitypub is fully functional in that regard.

But if users don’t want to do so, from either end, then it isn’t a flaw in either service or software.

So it isn’t lemmy that has broken anything. Nor mastodon. It’s people having preferences as to how they approach things. Some of that is a preference for not caring about the other branches of the fediverse. Which is perfectly valid. But, again, that’s not a broken promise.

To the contrary, I’d argue that it’s a promise fulfilled by activitypub. The promise of choice.

As far as I understand Mastodon is a short text social media site that is effectively the fediverse version of twitter. I never used twitter, so I don’t have a need for a twitter replacement. I don’t see how a Lemmy user not using Mastodon somehow means the fediverse is a failure.

I watch some Lemmy communities on Mastodon. Because forums work differently to a single short message feed, they don’t play well together, and I follow most communities directly in Lemmy.

I don’t see this as broken. The threadiverse federates best with apps that thread. Pixelfed federates best with image-centre apps.

They all allow you to move to different instances of create your own if you don’t agree with management. This is not broken, it is working as intended. No one should ever expect they are seeing all possible federated content no matter where they are viewing from.

That’s just people choosing how they want to interact with Lemmy or Mastodon. They’re two different platforms and people want to use them differently. Just because you can doesn’t mean it’s ideal.
