Well… Victor Frankenstein wasn’t a doctor in the book; he was a young student and he never achieved any degree. The “doctor” thing comes from the movies.

So true, who thinks ‘I want 10x more of that’ after the masters dissertation?. You think 'I need a vacation but I have no money and live in moms basement now

    But that’s another story…

Pretty much. Call me Dr. Washedupcynic. My current field doesn’t use my degree. Graduated in 2008 during the recession. Could not find a job in my field, so leveraged my degree to get into a weakly adjacent field. It’s wild getting calls from places I applied to in 2012 in my field trying to pitch me positions that pay less than what I make now, in a position that doesn’t require an advanced degree.

Free? I get paid for it, most PhD “students” here are university employees. I have to do some tutoring, but I can also get students that work for me.

This is literally true because you cannot get a PhD if you don’t learn to navigate University politics, which is the singular largest corrupting influence in academia. If you fail to do that, they literally give you a Masters as a consolation prize for preserving your integrity.

I beat the system by skipping the Master’s on the way to my PhD and then not getting the PhD in the end. Smoked a hell of a lot of dope, though.

Eh, maybe. It’ll probably be less relevant for me because the humanities are basically all politics, there’s very little way to just “get results.”

But i’ll probably still give it a read, it’s bound to be helpful.

Edit: did read, was depressing… I wonder how similar the experience is in a STEM program? I’m sure the advice of “choose your advisor carefully” applies, but at least internships are pretty common so you can ‘test drive’ your advisor somewhat.

Since a part of the funding the humanities are starved of is directed to STEM, it may be less arduous there. Problems of sexism won’t be much better, but maybe at least closer to the societal norm, which might be the most depressing sentence I’ve written in a while.

What do you mean with “get results”, by the way?

What do you mean with “get results”

              Publications, patents, grant funding…

Basically the sort of stuff that’s politically useful to your university and advisor regardless of any personality conflicts you may have

The reason I have a PhD is because I was about to drop out and get a real job, when one of our papers won an award and I backed my way into a thesis defense with a 30 page dissertation because it made my advisor look good.

Nah, according to my one daughter, (ME PhD), is when you get your masters, they let you play with all the cool toys. If you get your PhD, they let you be boss and take all the toys away from you…

The PhD process is so miserable and long that it will turn any sane person to the dark side, yes.

And if you stay on in academia rather than get out of it, well you’ll end up pure evil, but at least you’ll be cloistered and can’t really do any harm to the real world.

I just looked him up to see how long he lived after his arrest - he survived until 2023.

I’m weirdly empathetic towards him, because I absolutely understand his points, though I obviously don’t agree with his methods. I can’t imagine being at the point of mailing bombs out, then having to watch the world go from 1995-2023. It got so much worse in all the ways he worried about. (I mean, I can’t actually imagine getting to that point at all, to be absolutely clear- I’m not suggesting the unabomber was a good guy or justified, but the things that drove him to murder indiscriminately drive me to despair)

Iirc, he was also subjected to a grossly inhumane study in college lead by the pregenitor of the CIA. I can’t remember the name off the top of my head, but that study, along with the prison and prisoner-shocking experiments, are classic examples of unethical research. It puts T.K’s later behavior into perspective I think.
