I broke down the overlap of various dystopias a while back. IIRC, the vertical dichotomy is between order and chaos, and the horizontal is starvation vs. abundance.

Unfortunately we got the evil Antichrist Temu version of President Camacho, and Trump couldn’t even stay awake during his depraved MMA birthday party.

      Well, that’s a terrible realization.

In his defense, he was also president when NotSure came in and he applied that resource properly. He wasn’t the president that caused all of that. Trump, on the other hand, got in office in a much better time, and it has been nothing but destruction.

I don’t believe in AI so we’re not in Terminator (although it deserves a remake where the SkyNet just keeps making bad versions that do the most obvious mistakes)… And we’re only in the matrix as a metaphor for Capitalism… Only everyone knows they’re being made to choose pod life… And the VR simulations suck.

But Idiocracy feels the most true, only Comacho is a better person than the current leadership.

Making a field in a Venn diagram doesn’t give it more weight. A Venn diagram is only to show what is inclusive and exclusive to the fields included, and the size of a field itself has no importance, only with what other fields it interacts.

Forgive me for my ignorance, what is the top one?

(For the differently-ignorant, left is Idiocracy and right is Terminator)

Actually, being in the Matrix isn’t too bad. At least the Matrix has an incentive to protect humans from Skynet. I certainly wouldn’t want to live in Idiocracy because they all seem to be in poverty (just like Zion). In the Matrix, the world is more comfortable, both physically and mentally, even if you are under a simulation.

Considering braindances, Arasaka soulkiller and the blackwall I would say Matrix comes after as a natural evolution.

We’re not heading towards doom because pretty but dumb people outbred smart, rational people.

We’re collapsing because smart, evil fascists are okay with killing everyone so they can fuck kids on private islands.

Not every single aspect has to match for there to be a comparison. I don’t understand what replies like this are for. Is the idea that I haven’t noticed what’s happening in the world so you have to enlighten me? You did not. I haven’t been asleep for 20 years. Thanks anyhow though.

Honestly? Too many people just oversimplify it by saying things like “idiocracy is happening” which the op did. So, sure, I was making the point that it’s not even close.

If you’d like, you could explain to me how you think our current situation compares to Idiocracy.

It doesn’t seem like you saw or understood the movie if you can say that. You can argue all day about how not every fascist is stupid but trump certainly is and so are a few others such as hegseth. But even more relevant is that people are tuned out of anything important and tuned into idiotic entertainment which consumes their whole lives. I could go read about the movie to remind myself of more details but I have a feeling you’d shoot them all down anyway because of some difference. I rewatched that movie a couple years ago with my partner and it was full of moments where it seemed to if not predict things that hadn’t happened yet, to put its finger on something stupid about society that any semi intelligent person has noticed and always felt weird about.

Also did you forget that trump had a UFC fight near the Whitehouse recently…? That alone would warrant a comparison.

I’ll say that you’re right that many people are tuning into mindless entertainment.

And you’re right, you could make specific comparisons.

Op said we are living it which is not even close.

I admit that the internet is a place that lacks nuance, pleasantry, and understanding but your hostility and assumptions are uncalled for.

My hostility… You came in condescendingly dismissing a very easily seen point and it was just because you refuse and still refuse to see it. Not because it’s without basis. This is our last exchange.

Not really, the movie came out before smartphones and social media as we know it so it’s already outdated. Saying this movie is ackshully a documentary is such a reddit-tier take.

That’s equivalent to the take that 1984 (written in the 1940s) came out before digital cameras and therefor cannot be compared to at all.

I didn’t say that and also this is not a comment that interests me regardless. There’s plenty of ways to compare our situation with the movie, not that it would matter to the true akshually commenter.
